Recent years have seen unprecedented upheavals within the European logistics market – with Covid and Brexit happening almost simultaneously, it hit the whole industry hard. Very hard. While the world recovers from the Covid lockdown days, Brexit continues to develop and provides us with new challenges and lessons to be learned on a rolling basis. Some of the UK Government’s planned changes are still in the process of being rolled out – we have still not seen the end of these yet!
So how do you respond to an ever-changing landscape? When the rules you adhered to last week, no longer apply? When the documents required for that same shipment last month, are no longer valid and you need to source new forms and new details and complicated commodity codes? For many businesses this additional burden has caused them to pull back from the EU marketplace, some to cease trading entirely. The cost and time involved in doing business is becoming prohibitive for many.
We decided to tackle this head-on, and in 2024 we opened an EU base in Germany to service our UK and US exhibition and events clients who exhibit frequently within the EU. Holding exhibition stands and assets in Germany enables free movement of those assets throughout the EU without the burden of additional paperwork, customs forms and taxation liabilities. We can either have the stands and assets produced in Europe for our clients or create them in the UK and do a one-time shipment into our Germany warehouse. Once there, they can travel freely within the EU borders, it is more cost effective to ship their stand to the exhibition within the EU, and one of our stand build experts can travel out independently of the freight to oversee the installation at the tradeshow.
Training for our team is the other key to mitigating the ever-changing landscape. We are working hard to ensure we gain relevant accreditations and training for all our teams that enable them to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently.
