This week we were contacted by a local business who had a requirement for an urgent shipment from the UK to Slovakia, of computer server replacement parts, weighing just over 100kg in total.  Without these parts, and entire production line had ground to halt, and could not restart until these items were installed.  

The urgency and importance of the shipment required a bespoke solution – something that our freight team excels at!     Due to time constraints and value to our clients, an OBC shipment was required.  An on-board courier (OBC) is a service that delivers time-sensitive shipments by hand on scheduled passenger flights. OBCs are also known as hand-carry shipments. 

Finding the right solution...

OBCs are used to transport a variety of items, including:

The direct route is not always the quickest!

Creative planning was required for this shipment as there was no single direct route from A to B, within the required timescales.  Road freight would take too long – at 2 – 3 days, there was no real direct air freight option, and sending as general freight provided an unacceptable level of risk.    

Using a combination of air and road shipping solutions the OBC was the best all round option, ensuring a safe & timely delivery.    The shipment was taken as excess baggage, and someone accommodated the shipment right up until the delivery was made.  The best solution identified involved an air journey to Vienna (via Frankfurt), then road journey to its final destination in Slovakia.
